— REFUND STATUS

Where's my refund? Here's how to actually find out.

You're not being impatient. Everybody wants to know. Here's exactly where to look and what you'll see.

— CHECK WITH THE IRS DIRECTLY

The IRS runs the only tool that knows.

What you'll need

  • Your SSN or ITIN
  • Your filing status
  • The exact refund amount from your return

That amount is on your return copy in your client portal. Never type it into anything but the IRS site.

— WHAT EACH STATUS MEANS

Plain English for what you'll see.

Return Received

They have it, and nobody has looked at it yet. This is normal and it's where most returns sit for a while.

Refund Approved

It's been reviewed and cleared, and a date is coming. You'll usually see that date show up on the tool itself.

Refund Sent

It's moving. Bank posting takes a few more days after the IRS releases it, so give your bank a little time.

We can't provide any information

Usually this just means it's early, or the numbers you entered don't match the return exactly. Check the amount first before assuming anything is wrong.

Still processing beyond 21 days

Usually a review, and sometimes identity verification. Call us before you call the IRS, because we can pull a transcript and see what's actually happening.

— STATE REFUNDS

Tennessee filers, one less thing to track.

Tennessee has no individual income tax on wages, so most Tennessee filers have no state refund to track at all. If you lived or worked in another state during the year, that state may have its own refund tool, and we can tell you which one applies to your return.

— YOUR DOCUMENTS

Your return copy lives in the portal.

Sign in to the HB client portal for your return copy, your documents, and secure messages about your engagement.

— STILL STUCK

Then let's look at it together.

If the tool isn't giving you an answer and it's been a while, book a Pick My Brain session and we'll go through what was filed with you, or just call the office at 865.359.0228 and we'll go ahead and help.

STILL WAITING

Bring us the details and we'll help you sort it out.

If we prepared your return, we can look at what was filed with you.
